Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 1 (16 oz) package frozen potato and cheese pierogies
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 (14 oz) kielbasa sausage, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional, for added color and flavor)

Finish and Garnish

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Sauté Onions. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook until softened and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Cook Kielbasa. Add the sliced kielbasa to the skillet with onions and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until the sausage is lightly browned. Remove the skillet from heat.
  4. Make Cream Sauce. In a large bowl, whisk together sour cream, softened cream cheese, whole milk, garlic powder, black pepper, and optional paprika until the sauce is smooth and well combined.
  5. Combine Pierogies and Sauce. Place the frozen pierogies in the prepared baking dish. Pour the cream sauce over the pierogies and gently toss to coat them evenly.
  6. Add Onions and Kielbasa. Spread the cooked onions and kielbasa on top of the sauced pierogies, mixing slightly to distribute ingredients throughout the dish.
  7. Top with Cheese. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
  8. Bake Covered. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes to heat through and meld flavors.
  9. Bake Uncovered. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly browned.
  10. Garnish and Serve. Remove from the oven, garnish with chopped fresh parsley, and serve warm for a cozy, satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use reduced-fat sour cream and cream cheese, and low-sodium kielbasa for a lighter version.
  • Vegetarian alternative: substitute kielbasa with meat-free sausage or sautéed mushrooms.
  • Add vegetables like spinach, bell peppers, or steamed broccoli for extra nutrition and fiber.
  • For a crispy top, broil uncovered for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking.
  • Assemble ahead of time and refrigerate; increase baking time by 10 minutes when baking from cold.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator up to 4 days or freeze in portions for longer storage.
