5 from 486 reviews

This Zesty Jalapeno Honey Mustard Sauce is a vibrant, flavorful condiment blending the spicy kick of jalapenos with the sweetness of honey and the tanginess of mustard and apple cider vinegar. Perfect as a dip, spread, or glaze, it’s easy to make on the stovetop and elevates grilled meats, sandwiches, and fried foods with a delicious balance of heat and sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sauce Base

  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 medium Jalapenos, finely diced (seeds and membranes removed for less heat or left in for more)
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup Dijon Mustard
  • 1/4 cup Yellow Mustard
  • 1/4 cup Honey (or more, to taste)
  • 2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp Salt (or to taste)
  • 1/8 tsp Black Pepper, freshly ground
  • 2 tbsp Water (optional, to adjust consistency)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Jalapenos: Carefully dice the jalapenos, removing seeds and membranes if you prefer less heat. Mince the garlic finely to ensure even integration in the sauce.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced jalapenos and sauté for 5-7 minutes until they soften. Then add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, stirring frequently to avoid burning and release a fragrant aroma.
  3. Combine and Simmer: Remove the saucepan from heat, then add Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, honey, apple cider vinegar, salt, and black pepper. Whisk vigorously until smooth and well blended. Return the pan to low heat and gently simmer the sauce for 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally to meld flavors and thicken. If the sauce becomes too thick, whisk in water a tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
  4. Cool and Serve: Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool completely—it will thicken further as it cools. Taste and adjust honey, salt, or vinegar if needed. For a smoother texture, optionally blend the sauce until creamy or strain it through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any jalapeno pieces. Transfer the finished sauce to an airtight container.

Notes

  • This sauce works wonderfully as a dip for chicken tenders, fries, or pretzels.
  • Use it as a spread for sandwiches and wraps or as a glaze for grilled pork or chicken.
  • For an extra smoky flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika while simmering.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.
  • Adjust the heat level by controlling seed and membrane inclusion in jalapenos.
