Ingredients

Scale

Oreo Base

  • 24 Oreos
  • 4 oz softened cream cheese

Coating

  • 10 oz white candy melts (Ghirardelli brand recommended)
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream (use only if candy melts need thinning)

Instructions

  1. Crush the Oreos: Use a food processor to pulse all 24 Oreos (including cream filling) into a fine crumb resembling sand. Alternatively, place Oreos in a sealed zip-top bag and crush finely with a rolling pin or heavy pan.
  2. Mix the Base: In a medium bowl, combine the crushed Oreos with 4 oz softened cream cheese. Mix thoroughly using a spoon or your hands until you have a slightly sticky, dough-like consistency that holds together well. Add up to 1 tbsp more cream cheese if mixture feels dry.
  3. Form the Cake Balls: Take about 1 tablespoon of mixture and roll between palms into smooth, compact 1-inch balls. Place each formed ball onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. If mixture becomes too soft, chill it in the fridge for 10-15 minutes before continuing.
  4. Chill for Firmness: Refrigerate the baking sheet with cake balls for at least 30 minutes, or until they are firm to the touch. This step ensures the balls hold their shape during dipping.
  5. Melt the Candy Coating: Place 10 oz white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each until completely smooth. If too thick, add heavy cream one tablespoon at a time, stirring vigorously until you reach a smooth, fluid consistency.
  6. Dip the Cake Balls: Using a fork or dipping tool, submerge each chilled cake ball fully into the melted candy melts. Lift and allow excess coating to drip back into bowl. Place coated balls back on parchment paper. Use a toothpick to smooth any drips or imperfections.
  7. Set the Coating: Let the coated balls rest at room temperature for a few minutes to start firming the coating, then refrigerate for 15-20 minutes until candy coating is completely hardened.

Notes

  • Ensure cream cheese is softened before mixing to achieve smooth incorporation.
  • If candy melts are too thick, add heavy cream sparingly to avoid seizing.
  • Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  • Store finished cake balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • For longer storage, freeze cake balls for up to two months and thaw in the fridge before serving.
  • Alternative crushing method: use zip-top bag and rolling pin if no food processor is available.
  • Customize by using different colored candy melts, or rolling finished balls in sprinkles or chopped nuts.
