Ingredients

Scale

Apple Fries

  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or your favorite variety)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or regular breadcrumbs)
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Cooking spray

Dipping Sauce (Optional)

  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt (optional for a lighter option)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel the apples if desired and slice them into wedges about 1/2 inch thick. Remove the core and seeds from each slice. In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon and sugar, then set it aside for later use.
  2. Set Up the Breading Station: Arrange three separate bowls: one with the all-purpose flour, the second with the beaten eggs, and the third with the panko breadcrumbs. Mix half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture into the panko breadcrumbs evenly.
  3. Coat the Apple Slices: Dredge each apple wedge first in the flour, shaking off any excess. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, making sure the slice is fully coated. Finally, press the slice into the cinnamon-sugar breadcrumb mixture until evenly coated. Repeat for all apple slices.
  4. Air Fry: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes. Place the coated apple slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, avoiding overcrowding. Lightly spray the apple fries with cooking spray. Cook them for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they turn golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  5. Serve: As soon as the apple fries are done, sprinkle them with the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture to add extra sweetness. Serve immediately while hot with caramel sauce or vanilla yogurt on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Using tart apple varieties like Granny Smith gives a nice balance between sweet and tangy flavors that pairs well with the cinnamon sugar.
  • If you prefer a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
  • For extra crispiness, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket to allow proper air circulation.
  • These apple fries are best served fresh but can be briefly reheated in the air fryer to regain crispiness.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of cinnamon-sugar sprinkled before serving.
